Rehearsal - the path to the perfect show

The term rehearsal means “practice”. Before a show, a production or a fashion show, everyone involved practises the choreography together. Whether models, actors, choreographers or sound technicians - all participants test the quality and interaction of their contributions. The rehearsal serves as targeted preparation for the event and is crucial for the success of a performance.

What happens in the rehearsals?

Planned performances are prepared, practiced and refined together. This allows the various areas of a production - such as dialog, choreography, stage design, lighting, sound and texts - to be optimally coordinated. Changes can also be made to costumes, make-up or poses in order to maximize the effect of the presentation. Sometimes the sequence is rearranged, the lighting concept adapted or the stage set changed to enhance certain effects. Rehearsals usually take place in the days before the performance. Several rehearsals are often necessary until all elements work together smoothly. The final rehearsal marks the end of the preparations. It only allows for minor corrections, as the actual performance usually takes place directly afterwards. Dress rehearsals are planned in detail. Individual sections may have to be repeated and revised several times in order to optimize the effect and sequence. A dress rehearsal can last up to several hours. Often a preparation day is also scheduled - a whole day dedicated to intensive overall preparation.

Coordination - the process has to work

Rehearsals ensure that everything runs smoothly during the performance. The artists have the opportunity to familiarize themselves deeply with the content of their roles and interpret characters convincingly. Choreographers and directors provide feedback in order to jointly develop the best possible version of the production.

What makes rehearsals a challenge?

The time available is often short as many employees are involved. Coordination can also be complex with large teams. If changes are necessary, flexibility, adaptability and constructive cooperation are required from everyone involved.

Rehearsals in various areas

In musical rehearsals, the focus is on the interaction between instrumentalists and singers. If several orchestras or musicians are involved, the focus is also on a coordinated sequence and harmonious overall sound. In dance rehearsals, the focus is on timing, movement sequences and choreography. Theater rehearsals include the development of stage movements, dialogues and the interaction between the actors. Rehearsals are essential for the success of a production. Good preparation and the mandatory participation of all participants in the rehearsals are crucial in order to bring an excellent quality performance to the stage.
